The U.S. dollar was sold at 19,230 rials on Iran's unofficial market on Wednesday, compared to 19,360 rials on Tuesday. Each Azadi gold coin was also sold at 7.2 million rials, unchanged compared to the day before, according to the Mehr News Agency.

Each ounce of gold was priced at $1577 in international markets.

The euro and pound were sold at 24,000 rials and 30,150 rials, compared to 24,150 rials and 30,000 rials on Tuesday, respectively.

Iran's central bank allowed trading in its currency at market levels after fixing the exchange rate in January as the threat of sanctions over the country's nuclear program and economic risks spurred Iranians to buy up dollars.

The bank on Jan. 26 fixed the rate at 12,260 after the U.S. dollar surged to almost double that level in unofficial currency markets.
