Syrian government officials took to the Syrian Free Army responsible for the abduction of 48 Iranian pilgrims in Damascus earlier today, Fars news reported.

The Syrian official, who asked to remain unnamed, said that armed assailants attacked the bus and kidnapped the Iranian pilgrims in Zeinabiyah neighborhood as the vehicle was moving towards Damascus international airport at 12 (local time).

According to the official, the Syrian security forces rushed to the scene minutes later and their early probes revealed that abductors affiliated to the Syrian Free Army.

The official said the bus was attacked on a road leading to the Damascus international airport.

He said it is still too early to talk about the personal identity of the abductors, "but the Syrian government has been informed of the development and is following up on the issue very seriously".

The Iranian pilgrims were returning from a pilgrimage trip to Syria when their bus was hijacked.
