Iran has the potential to be turned into a hub of transactions in different fields of energy, IRIB quoted Davood Manzoor, the secretary of the national Iranian energy committee, as saying.

Iran is among the best countries in the electricity industry and is the 21st biggest electricity producer in the world, he added.

Launching the proposed energy bourse can help the country expand regional and extra-regional markets in this sector, he noted.

On May 6, the managing director of Electricity Network Management Company, Mirfattah Fattah-Qarabagh, stated that ground is prepared to inaugurate the bourse with the focus on electricity.

"Although Iran's electricity market is a competitive one, a large number of power plants are still state-run which by being ceded to the private sector they will also enter this competitive market."

He said that based on the plan of the Energy Ministry, some 50 percent of electricity transactions will be made via the Energy Bourse by 2013.

On June 23, the energy bourse's managing director, Shapour Mohammadi, said Iran will begin transactions at its energy bourse by the next five months.

He added that electricity and every other product, except for petrochemicals, will be transacted in the bourse.

Products of other countries can also be sold at the energy bourse, he said.
