Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi has thanked United Nations peace envoy Lakhdar Brahimi for brokering a ceasefire between the conflicting sides in Syria during the Eid Al Adha feast which started on Friday, Mehr News reported.
In his telephone talks with Brahimi on Thursday, Salehi called the declaration of ceasefire an important step to start efforts for a political solution to the 19-month conflict in Syria.
Brahimi, the UN special envoy on Syria, also thanked Iran for its positive and active role for such a success and expressed hope that all sides would observe the truce so that the ground will be prepared for a durable peace in Syria.
Brahimi has stressed the importance of even a temporary lull in the fighting, saying: "If we succeed with this modest initiative, a longer ceasefire can be built" that would allow the launch of a political process.
