Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Thursday criticized the US presidential election as a "battleground for capitalists", dpa reported.

"An election which is a manifestation of the people's will has become a battleground for capitalists and an excuse for big spending," he said in a speech at the Bali Democracy Forum on the Indonesian resort island.

"Democracy has turned into the rule of the minority over the majority," he said.

Critics have accused Ahmadinejad of rigging a 2009 election and condemned his government's crackdown on protests against the election results.

Iran has been grappling with Western-led economic sanctions over its nuclear programme. Iran has denied charges by the US and its allies that it is seeking to build nuclear weapons.
