From June 1986 to June 2013, 5,354 people Iran have died from AIDS, Mehr reported, refering to statistics gathered from country's medical universities.

According to those medical reports, 26,556 people were registered as infected with AIDS, with 89.6 percent of the mentioned amount of people were males, 10.4 percent - females.

68.4 percent of people got infected because of injections, 12.3 percent - due to sexual acts, and 17 more percent due to undisclosed reasons.

Further on, the reports say that 46.1 percent of the mentioned amount of people are aged from 25 to 34.

Iranian Labour and Social Security Ministry official Hassan Mousavi also said in July that the number of people infected with AIDS through sex reached 33 percent in Iran the past two years.

The Iranian AIDS-fighting Committee has warned of increasing cases of AIDS infection through sexual contact. According to the Committee, the research shows that there are 100,000 AIDS virus carriers, of which only 27,000 have been registered.

According to the Iranian media reports, around 75 percent of infected are unaware of their disease.

Last year, Iran's former health minister Marzieh Vahid Dastjerdi said that around 93,000 AIDS virus carriers were registered in the country.

Information about AIDS is hidden in Iran for mental and religious reasons. People are not informed about virus transmission, so the number of infected in the country has greatly increased.
