Tehran City Council on Sunday chose incumbent Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf as new mayor of Tehran.

Qalibaf won 16 votes of the council members, while his rival Mohsen Hashemi won the other 15 votes, the Mehr News Agency reported.

Qalibaf has held the office for three consecutive terms since 2005.

The two candidates, incumbent Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf and his challenger Mohsen Hashemi, defended their plans before the vote.

Hashemi was the former head of Tehran Metro Company and an advisor to Qalibaf. He is affiliated with the reformist camp while Qalibaf is a principlist.
