(IRNA) - Iranian Ambassador to Paris Ali Ahani said here Wednesday evening that an Iranian proposal for France to form an international consortium to monitor nuclear enrichment in Iranian territory invites companies all over the world to participate, adding that this new initiative to try to settle the standoff over Iran's nuclear activities proves they are for peaceful purposes.

Speaking to reporters at a press confernce here, he said that France has rejected the proposal due to certain considerations, reports Trend.

Asked whether Iran has been in talks with the French nuclear company Areva, Ahani said Tehran has had no negotiations with Areva but quoted President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as saying the proposal was open to all companies who wish to join the consortium.

France can play a key role in ending Iran's nuclear standoff with the West, he said, adding that Paris has the clout to accelerate ongoing nuclear talks.

Tehran welcomes any proposal to resolve the issue which guarantees its rights under the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) as well as opens the door to a negotiated solution, the Iranian envoy said.

Asked whether Iran was in contact with the French nuclear company Eurodif, he said: "We are in contact with them and attend the meetings of the company's executive council. We will continue our partnership. We will defend our right and will not hesitate to oppose some of their views and attitudes."
