Baku, Azerbaijan, Oct. 31

By Fatih Karimov - Trend: Iran will officially ban importing of consumer goods from the US.

Iran's Industry, Mining, and Trade Minister Mohammad Reza Nematzadeh said: "We will issue a bylaw to ban importing consumer goods from the US," Mehr news agency reported on October 31.

Paying attention to the improvement of domestic production is among the main strategies of the ministry, he added.

Referring to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's remarks on curbing irregular imports of consumer goods, especially from the US, Nematzadeh said recommendations of the Supreme Leader on this issue are very valuable.

That was while Iranian government spokesman Mohammad Baqer Nobakht said Oct. 27 that importing goods from the US is not legally prohibited.

"However, we will follow the Supreme Leader's notifications," he added.

"So, we recommended manufacturers to improve quality of their products in order to make the country free from importing foreign products."

Imports will not be carried out except for inevitable cases, he noted.

"Based on the law, the only country we are not allowed to import from is Israel, but there are no limitations from importing from the US. The Supreme Leader has emphasized that consumer goods should not be imported from the US, but transferring technology will not be legally banned."
