The Iranian Ministry of Energy is carrying out preliminary steps to transfer water from the Caspian Sea to the central Iranian plateau, Minister Hamid Chitchian said.

The plan is under study and a number of scientific investigations into the feasibility of the project are being carried out, he said, Mizan news agency reported July 5.

“We have sent a report to the Department of Environment and in case the department agrees with the plan, the final studies will be carried out and the plan will enter its operational phase,” Chitchian noted.

He underlined that the ministry is considering the entire environmental and social impacts of the project and will make sure that it will not harm the country or the region.

The central Iranian Plateau is an arid expanse of land that covers a large portion of Iran’s territory.

Iran has been facing a general drought in the past two-three decades.
