By Fatih Karimov – Trend:

Iran is negotiating with Turkmenistan for gas swap, Alireza Kameli, managing director of the National Iranian Gas Export Company, said.

Talks are underway for transfer of Turkmen gas to Turkey through Iran, Kameli said, Mehr news agency reported Sept. 21.

He did not unveil further details.

Iran currently exports 32 million cubic meters of gas on a daily basis, Kameli said, adding the country plans to increase its gas export as the output is scheduled to hit 300 million cubic meters per day in the next three years.

Earlier in August, Azizollah Ramazani, director of the International Affairs Department at the National Iranian Gas Company, said an Iranian private company is negotiating with Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan for gas swap between the two countries through Iran.

Iran has already announced readiness for natural gas swap projects with Russia, Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan.

It was earlier announced that Iran and Azerbaijan agreed to increase the volume of gas swap. The two countries have gas swap infrastructure via which Azerbaijan supplies its fuel to Iran’s northern provinces. Iran, for its part, ensures the gas demand of Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic of Azerbaijan.

The Islamic Republic holds 34 trillion cubic meters of proven gas reserves, sharing 18.2 percent of total global gas reserves, which puts the country in the top of the world's gas holders list.
