Iran plans to develop its northern port of Astara in order to make the port capable of admitting large ships sailing in the Caspian Sea.

Hassan Cheraghi, the head of the provincial office of Ports and Maritime Organization of Iran in Gilan Province, has said that under the
development plan the water depth at the canal of Astara port will increase in order to make it possible to admit various vessels, IRIB

The official added that the development plan includes construction of three new cargo wharfs and a new wharf for refueling.

Cheraghi further described Astara port as a significant port adding that it should be maintained in order to offer proper services.

Over 187,000 tons of goods were loaded and unloaded at the port of Astara over the last Iranian calendar year (ended 20 March 216).
