Iran has opened LC for a joint electric railway project with China, Saeed Mohammadzadeh, head of the Islamic Republic of Iran Railways, said, the state-run IRINN TV reported May 1.

Mohammadzadeh said that the LC is opened for the project of electrifying the railway linking the capital city of Tehran to northeastern Mashhad city.

The official further said the project is due to be implemented by an Iranian-Chinese consortium, forecasting that the project’s implementation would start by the end of the spring.

Iran has carried out all preparations under the contract and the contractor has expressed readiness to start the project, he added.

The contract for the project was signed in 2014 and a consortium, including the Iranian companies of MAPNA, MAPNA Ehdas and MAPNA International and the Chinese firms CMC and SU Power, was formed for implementation of the project.

The deal envisages reforming and constructing the Tehran-Mashhad railway for trains with 200 km/h speed, building electric railway for trains with 250 km/h speed and procure 70 electric locomotives.

Mohammadzadeh further touched upon the latest developments on an electric railway project linking Garmsar city near Tehran to border town of Incheh Borun in the northeastern Golestan province, which is awarded to Russia, expressing hope that the project will start soon. He said its implementation will start after opening an LC.

“We hope that the LC will be opened during the current fiscal year (started March 2018),” Mohammadzadeh said.
