Trend:

The groundbreaking ceremony for the first floating solar power plant of Iran took place May 14 at south eastern Zehak city with presence of Sourena Sattari, Iran’s vice president for science and technology.

The floating solar power plant will be constructed on the Chahnimeh dams, Iran’s state-run IRINN TV reported.

The power plant will cover an area of 14 hectares with a capacity of producing 7 megawatts.

The construction of the power plant is expected to cost about 8.5 million euros.

Iran plans to increase its nominal electric generation capacity to 100,000 by 2025, 1,000 MW of which should be produced from solar energy.‎

The nominal electric generation capacity of the country currently stands at 78,484 MW. Gas power plants (24,634 MW) share 31.39 percent of the generation capacity meanwhile the share of renewables stands at only 0.46 percent or 364 MW.

The country’s power plants generated over 19,163 GWh (gigawatt hours) of electricity since the beginning of the current Iranian fiscal year (March 20) until April 13.

Iranian administration in recent months has signed several agreements with foreign companies for establishing solar panels’ manufacturing plants in Iran, in a bid to increase the share of home-made photovoltaic panels in its growing solar energy sector.
