Iran will require 20 billion euros until 2021 to build the necessary infrastructure for the railway sector, said CEO of the Islamic Republic of Iran Railways Saeed Mohammadzadeh.

He made the remarks during the meeting dedicated to investment opportunities in the country’s railway sector, IRNA reported.

He noted that 54 percent of these investments will be provided by the private sector, while 46 percent of this amount will account for the public sector. Currently, the railway sector accounts for transportation of 12 percent of goods and 8 percent of passengers, added the CEO.

“Every year, around 100 billion passengers use railway transport in Tehran suburbs. Statistics show that railway sector provides transportation of one billion tons of goods per kilometer, which allows to save $20 million worth fuel,” Mohammadzadeh said.
