The Azerbaijani state will save the qanats or kahrizs (underground water channel) in Karabakh and surrounding areas from their current state, PhD in Human Geography Senior Researcher, ICQHS International Center on Qanats and Historic Hydraulic Structures Majid Labbaf Khaneiki told Trend .
Labbaf Khaneiki emphasized that Azerbaijan has enough potential to improve the situation.
The official added that there are enough specialists in Baku, Ganja and Nakhchivan universities of Azerbaijan to help out with the issue.
“I am confident that Azerbaijani specialists will be able to restore the operation of qanats in Nagorno-Karabakh,” he said.
Labbaf Khaneiki noted that Azerbaijan has qanats which have long historical roots.
The researcher stressed that Azerbaijan has made great strides on the protection and study of qanats, which also contributes to protection of historical and ecological monuments. Azerbaijan cooperates with international organizations in this regard.
