Iran counts volume of to-buy sugar beet from West Azerbaijan's farmers

BAKU, Azerbaijan, March 6. Around 1.45 million tons of sugar beet worth 41.9 trillion rials (about $998 million) have been purchased from farmers in Iran's West Azerbaijan Province, located in northwestern Iran, from the beginning of the current Iranian year (from March 21, 2023, through March 6, 2024) to the present, deputy director of Iran's West Azerbaijan Province Agriculture Department Ali Deyanati said, Trend reports.

According to him, sugar companies in the province purchased the specified volume of sugar beet. Circa 98 percent of the funds for sugar beet purchased with a guarantee have been paid to farmers, and the remaining funds are expected to be paid to farmers shortly.

He added that a total of 1.67 million tons of sugar beet had been harvested in the region.

An official of the administration informed me that six sugar factories are operating in the region. A total of 21,000 tons of sugar can be processed daily at these factories.

To note, sugar beet is grown on 30,000 hectares in the West Azerbaijan Province of Iran. Of these, 28,000 hectares are fertile. Mainly, sugar beet is grown in Piranshahr, Bukan, Miyandab, and Nagada districts of the province.
