BAKU, Azerbaijan, April 6. The excavations will start soon at Mokhtar gas field in Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad provinces located in the southwest of Iran, executive director of Iran's Central Oil Zones company Mehdi Heydari said, Trend reports.

According to Heydari, with the drilling of the first well at the Mokhtar gas field, detailed information about the field will be obtained, and thus the National Oil Company of Iran will be able to implement its long-term program on this field.

To note, the Mokhtar gas field was discovered in 1990, 10 kilometers from the city of Yasuj in the Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad provinces of Iran. It is reported that the gas reserves of this field are more than 20 bcm of gas. Additionally, it is noted that 420 million euros should be invested in developing this field, and 10 million cubic meters of gas will be produced daily from the field.

However, Iran intends to use the Mokhtar gas field as an underground natural gas storage facility after the end of gas production. Thus, during 8 hot months of the year, 1.25 bcm of gas (5 million cubic meters per day) will be pumped into this field, and during 4 cold months, 10 million cubic meters of gas will be extracted from the field.

To note, Iran has been ranked as the second-largest gas reserve country in the world, with about 34 trillion cubic meters of gas reserves. Presently, 22 gas fields are operating in Iran.
