Khamenei: Iran to react if US extends sanctions

Baku, Azerbaijan, Nov. 23

By Fatih Karimov – Trend:

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has said that a possible extension of the US sanctions against Iran will certainly be a breach of the nuclear deal.

He made the remarks during a meeting with a group of Basij (popular voluntary mobilized forces) commanders and members from across Iran on Nov. 23, the official website of the supreme leader reported.

Khamenei said the US has so far committed several violations regarding the JCPOA (Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action aka nuclear deal), including the latest extension of sanctions against Iran for 10 years.

The House of Representatives voted on Nov. 15 for legislation to extend American sanctions on Iran for 10 years. The legislation, known as the Iran Sanctions Extension Act, needs Senate’s approval and President Barack Obama’s signature before the end of the year, when American sanctions are set to expire.

“If the legislation comes into force it will be a violation of the nuclear deal and the Islamic Republic will certainly react to it,” Khamenei said.

The P5+1 (China, France, Russia, the UK, the US as well as Germany) reached a historic deal with Iran last year to curb the Islamic Republic’s nuclear program in return of lifting the nuclear related sanctions. The deal came into force in January.
