The number of people revealed to be HIV-positive in Iran has reached 31,000, said Parvin Afsar Kazeruni, director of the Bureau of the AIDS at the Iranian Ministry of Health.

The mentioned number however does not include the non-registered people, she told IRIB TV.

Kazeruni underlined that in Iran, 67 percent of those diagnosed as HIV-positive, have acquired the virus via injection, while 18 percent have caught it via sexual intercourses.

Kazeruni further said that the measures to prevent the spread of the disease have been less than enough to tackle the problem.

In 2013, Iran's Health Minister Hassan Hashemi expressed worries over the fast pace of the spread of AIDS in Iran, adding that a taboo about the disease prevents many Iranians from knowing they are infected.
