Consumer market

In January to April 2009 a rise of the retail goods turnover got restored amid continuing rise of the community services and was 9.9%. The amount of retail goods turnover comprised AZN 3670.6mln or 8.1% up as compared to last year.

According to data provided by the State Statistics Committee of Azerbaijan, of the total amount, AZN 2.437.1mln was made up of foodstuffs, AZN 1.233.5mln - non foodstuffs. The increase in sales on both goods was 10.7% and 3.4% respectively.

In January to April commercial services to population made up 1.107.1 million manat, or up 16.1 percent. As many as 79.7 percent of the services accounted for legal entities, 20.2 percent physical entities, an increase by 17.2 and 11.8 percent respectively.

Some 14.5 percent of total sale fell on legal entities, 43.6 percent on physical entities during the fairs and markets and only 41.1 percent on private entrepreneurs.

Prices

In January to April 2009 the growth pace of inflation was 6.5% as compared to similar period of 2008. In January to April 2008, this figure was 17.8%. A total of 586 food and non-food products and types of services have been included in the food basket to calculate inflation.

In April 2009, the prices for the consumer goods and service tariffs reduced 0.2%. The food prices decreased 0.3%. The prices of non-foods declined 0.2%. The service prices remained unchanged.

Thus, during this period, the food prices rose 6.2% compared to January to April 2008, non-food products - 7.2%, service prices - 6.2%.

In April 2009, the base index of the consumer prices incurring seasonal changes (fruits and vegetable) and being regulated by the Government made up 99.7% as compared to the previous month, and 108.1% to the same period of the last year.    

As compared to the previous month, in April 2009 the index of industrial goods price decreased 0.3%, but reduced 38.9% compared to the same period of the last year.

The price in oil and gas production increased 0.1% in March compared to February 2009, but decreased 54.5% compared to the same period of 2008.  

The prices in refining chemical products declined 4.1% in the month and reduction totaled 23% at annualized pace. In April, the prices in metallurgy reduced by 2.3%, and 13.1% at annualized pace.

The prices for electricity, gas and water remained in its previous level in April as compared to March 2009, but grew 1.6% at annualized pace
