( Interfax ) - The Georgian parliament decided to discuss a possible transition to a constitutional monarchy on October 25 after 104 MPs backed such a discussion, with six voting against on Friday.
The New Right faction, the author of the motion, thinks that the initiative needs to be discussed.
Pikriya Chikhradze, an MP from the New Right faction, insisted that Georgian Parliamentary Speaker Nino Burjanadze attend the October 25 discussion. The speaker has opposed the idea of a transition to a constitutional monarchy, favoring a presidential form of governance in the country.
Catholicos-Patriarch of the Georgian Orthodox Church Iliya II has called for the introduction of a constitutional monarchy in the country in his prayers. A new king of the Bagratid dynasty should be elevated and a legal basis for a transition to a constitutional monarchy could be created then.
