The European Union (EU) has allocated 1.2 million euro to the office of the Georgian Public Defender, EU representation in Georgia told Trend. This grant will be allocated within three years until 2015.
EU representative in Georgia, Ambassador Philip Dimitrov and Deputy Public Defender Tata Khuntsaria signed the relevant agreement.
The grant will help to strengthen the Public Defender's Apparatus, more effective work with private complaints to the Ombudsman Office, as well as raising citizens' awareness of matters of state institutions and protection of human rights.
Persons in detention, children's homes and psychiatric hospitals will directly benefit from the grant.
The EU's new funding will ensure fulfillment of "Comprehensive institutional development program," signed by Georgian Deputy Prime Minister Giorgi Baramidze and the EU Ambassador to the country Philip Dimitrov on April 24.
