A Ukrainian court has sentenced a former employee of the Constitutional Security Department of the Interior Ministry Oleg Melnikov to 12 months imprisonment as a measure of restraint.

A Ukrainian court has sentenced a former employee of the Constitutional Security Department of the Interior Ministry Oleg Melnikov to 12 months imprisonment as a measure of restraint. The question of his extradition to Georgia has not yet been resolved.

The court found evidence presented by the Georgian side against Melnikov insufficient for extradition.

According to Melnikov's lawyer Malkhaz Velidzhanashvili, Georgian prosecutor's office did not present conclusive evidence against his client.

A search was launched for Oleg Melnikov on December 5, 2012. He was arrested in Ukraine on December 8. He is charged with abuse of power. Tbilisi City Court sentenced him to two months in prison in his absence.
