Georgia, Tbilisi, Feb. 21 / Trend, N. Kirtskhalia /

A reform of local government is planned in Georgia, Georgian Minister of Regional Development and Infrastructure David Narmania told reporters after a government meeting on Wednesday.

He said this reform is planned by Georgian Dream political coalition in accordance with the pre-election program and the program of the government.

Narmania said the governors institution will be abolished in Georgia.

"This is a quite an important reform for development in local democracy in Georgia, which provides for the greater development of local self-government, greater involvement of local people in decision-making and greater decentralization of power. Many current functions of the central authorities have to be transferred to the local self-government in course of time. We will consider this question and familiarize you with its results after the meeting, "he said.

The minister noted that legislation will be developed for the formation of regional territorial departments. Presumably, a representative body will be established in the regions which will be formed by the elected representatives of the local self-government. The region will have an executive power, which will be managed by the head of administration.

"The three candidates for the post of head of regional administration will be elected by regional council to be formed of representatives of the local self-government," he said.

The minister said the new rules will come into force after the elections to the local self-government in 2014.
