Prime Minister of Georgia Bidzina Ivanishvili thanked the police for their actions on May 17, when a small group of LGBT advocates was attacked by a crowd of thousands of Orthodox radicals.

"The police acted well, and when the issue of rescuing the minority arose, the police acted courageously to protect them from the raging crowd," Ivanishvili said at the police parade dedicated to the police professional day celebrated in Georgia on May 19.

"The police properly planned everything and operated in the public interest. I am pleased with how the operation was planned by the administration of the Interior Ministry," he said.

The Prime Minister noted that he was glad that the Minister Irakli Garibashvili coped with his powers with honor. and he was satisfied with his work.

"Garibashvili is not only a minister, but he also has a dan in kick-boxing, so he can stand next to the police in a street fight," he said.

"We are building a democratic society in which police take its rightful place," Garibashvili said.

The Minister awarded 50 policemen with medals and brevets.

Before the parade the Interior Minister spoke to the Prime Minister, the Speaker of Parliament David Usupashvili and other officials about the achievements and changes in the police, which were introduced after 'Georgian Dream' coalition's victory at the elections.

The innovations include new police forms, tokens, cars, car video recorders and video cameras attached to the uniform.

The Police Day in Georgia is usually celebrated on May 6, but due to the fact that the day coincided with Easter, its celebration was postponed to May 19, the Interior Ministry explained.
