The Prime Minister of Georgia Bidzina Ivanishvili welcomes the EU interest in what has been going on in the country.
"I welcome the joint statement by the EU High Representative on Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton and the EU Commissioner for European Neighbourhood Policy Stefan Fule. The interest of high-ranking representatives of the European Union to the ongoing processes in Georgia is of great importance to us. I believe the relevant authorities will do their best to process each case in compliance with all international standards and laws of Georgia," the Prime Minister of Georgia said on Tuesday.
Catherine Ashton and Stefan Fule will carefully follow the processes with regards to the former Prime Minister of Georgia Vano Merabishvili ter and the Minister of Health Zurab Chiaberashvili, the EU representatives said.
"The European Union will closely monitor the legal process against them, which we expect to be honest, transparent and independent in full accordance with international standards," according to a joint statement by Ashton and Fule.
The document also stresses that Ashton and Fule hope for justice in both cases as well as for the absence of political motivation.
Merabishvili and Tchiaberashvili were arrested on May 21 after being questioned in Kutaisi. They, in particular, are accused of corrupt usage of budgetary funds in the amount of nearly $3.2 million to pay 22,000 individuals for the election campaign.
