All the major political forces in Georgia are united around the idea of the country's membership in NATO and the EU. NATO membership is not such a distant prospect, the Prime Minister of Georgia Bidzina Ivanishvili said, speaking on Friday at a conference on defence and security in Batumi.

"Our main weapon is the democratic development of Georgia. Nothing else, no method, no agent and no path may ensure our success," he said.

According to Ivanishvili, the Georgian people are well aware that NATO is not only a military association, but also a larger political union and membership in the alliance is important.

Alongside, Ivanishvili said he understands this is a difficult path, but the government of Georgia will not swerve away from it.

"I assure you that the Georgian leadership has a strong political will not to turn away from this path. We came to power to continue the path of normal development of the country so that Georgia may become a worthy member of the world community. It is very important that in this way we are supported by friendly countries," Ivanishvili said.
