Georgian presidential Democratic Movement candidate and parliamentary ex-speaker Nino Burjanadze is demanding the withdrawal of the Georgian military contingent from Afghanistan.

"There is nothing for our military to do in Afghanistan. I consider that a year would be enough for the withdrawal of the contingent 1500, but the new Georgian authority did not do that and eventually we lost 20 young men," Burjanadze declared in her speech at a meeting with her electors in the Kakheti region (Eastern Georgia).

She considers that for Georgia 'there is no possibility to make 1500 military personnel cannon fodder' and it is enough to send several military personnel to Afghanistan.

"The Baltic States send five, 10, 15 people and we sent 1500 as cannon fodder in order to please President Mikheil Saakashvili," noted the presidential candidate.

She also drew attention to the fact the military of other countries serving in Afghanistan, receive $10,000 monthly whilst Georgians receive just $1000.

"If NATO is our friend, then let them pay for the military service on a uniform tariff," Burjanadze underscored.
