Georgia’s ex-Defence minister returns to country for interrogation in prosecutor’s office

Georgia's ex-Minister of Corrections and Legal Assistance and ex-Defense Minister Dimitri Shashkin arrived in Tbilisi from Munich on Wednesday morning.

The former Minister told journalists in Tbilisi International Airport, that he was ready to come to prosecutor's office in order to cooperate with the investigation and to comprehensively answers to all questions.

According to him, the notice of appointment from Georgia's Prosecutor's Office has not been delivered to him, so he does not know when the interrogation will be held.

However Shashkin noted the fact that senior officials were allegedly informed about the inhuman treatment of prisoners in Georgia is absurd.

Earlier the Minister of Corrections and Legal Assistance Khatuna Kalmakhelidze was investigated in relation to the abovementioned facts.

According to the statement issued by the General Prosecutor's Office of Georgia on August 16, as a result of a detailed study of dozens of criminal cases involving allegations of inhumane treatment of prisoners, the facts giving evidence of non-compliance of ministry responsible for the actions of the Department of Corrections with its control function were revealed, what contains elements of a crime.
