There are more than 450,000 internally displaced persons in Georgia, and the government's main task is to assist their socio-economic integration and to improve the life conditions, until their safe and dignified return home becomes possible, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili said.

He made the remarks at the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) in the UN headquarters.

"This conference is held when the world faces a number of significant challenges," he said.

"Georgia has a comprehensive social protection strategy," Garibashvili said. "The main emphasis is made on the protection of socially vulnerable layers of the population, as well as protection against poverty in old age. The newly established Solidarity Fund will mobilize off-budgetary resources to support the most vulnerable people."

"However, much work is planned to be conducted in this area," Garibashvili said.
