Abkhazia must have no illusions in connection with recognition

Abkhazia's representatives must have no illusions in connection with the international community's recognition, Georgian First Deputy Foreign Minister David Zalkaliani said.

He made this statement in connection with Abkhazia's de facto foreign minister Vyacheslav Chirikba's speech at the Chatham House, the Royal Institute of International Affairs in London.

He said that Chirikba is a citizen of Holland and it would be easy for him to come to Great Britain.

"British colleagues know our position," he said. "We are supported by the international community in this issue. Abkhazia's representatives must have no illusions in connection with the international community's recognition. It is impossible because the international community supports the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Georgia."

He said that Georgia offers Abkhazians to share blessing to be obtained by Georgia as a result of the Association Agreement with the EU, as well as the visa liberalization.

On the night of August 8, 2008, military actions were launched on the territory of South Ossetia, Georgia. Later the Russian troops occupied the city and drove back the Georgian military. In late August, Russia recognized the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. In response, Tbilisi broke off diplomatic relations with Moscow and announced two unrecognized republics as occupied territories.
