The President of Georgia Giorgi Margvelashvili vetoed a draft law on wiretapping of citizens' phone conversations, earlier passed by Georgia's parliament.

Margvelashvili told reporters Oct. 31 that taking this decision, he proceeded from the need to protect citizens from illegal interception of telephone conversations.

"I urge the MPs to understand and ask them to take a decision, which is required by the society," he stressed.

The Georgia parliament passed a draft law on Oct. 30 on postponing the adoption of amendments to the "Law on electronic communications" for March 1, 2015.

The draft law associated with investigative measures had already been passed by the parliament in its first reading in May 2014.

But later, the process of its approval was suspended, as under the draft law, the access to wiretapping of citizens' phone conversations goes from the Interior Ministry to the telecommunications companies.
