By Nana Kirtzkhalia - Trend:

A battalion of Georgian armed forces has officially joined the NATO-led ISAF mission in Afghanistan, Georgian Defense Ministry said on Nov.3.

The ceremony of joining of the 51st battalion of the fifth infantry brigade of Georgian armed forces to the mission took place on the Afghan air base in Bagram. Bagram Airfield is the largest U.S. military base in Afghanistan.

The 51st battalion of the fifth infantry brigade is the first Georgian unit which will perform tasks within the final phase of the ISAF mission on the Bagram air base.

With the launch of the final stage of the transition process in June 2013, the Afghan forces have taken the lead for security across the whole country. ISAF's mission will be completed at the end of 2014.

A new, smaller non-combat mission ("Resolute Support") will provide further support for the continued development and sustainment of the Afghan security forces and institutions post-2014.
