Iraqi President Jalal Talabani has written to US President Barack Obama congratulating the United States on killing al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, saying the world has eliminated a "symbol of evil," news website Aswat al-Iraq reported on Tuesday.
Aswat al-Iraq said it received a copy of the letter that was sent to Obama, in which Talabani also confirmed that "Iraq is the ally of the United States in the war on terrorism."
The Iraqi president said bin Laden's death "has put an end for a criminal, who had harmed the Islamic religion, the religion of forgiveness and love, killing thousands of innocent people of different religions, many of them Muslims."
Talabani concluded by writing that terrorist groups will try to carry out revenge operations that will require countries to further cooperate to curb any attacks, DPA reported.
Suicide bombings by terrorist groups in Iraq that support the al-Qaeda ideology have claimed the lives of thousands of Iraqis since the start of the US-led invasion in 2003.
