Report: Egyptian president reinstates dissolved parliament

Arab World Materials 8 July 2012 21:23 (UTC +04:00)

Egypt's new president, Mohammed Morsi, has overturned a decision by the country's highest court by reinstating the Islamist-dominated lower house of parliament, state television reported Sunday.

Morsi, who assumed office on June 30, issued a decree for the People's Assembly, or the legislature, to re-convene and exercise its powers, dpa reported.

The Supreme Constitutional Court had last month invalidated the legislature and termed its electoral law unconstitutional.

That ruling, endorsed by the powerful military, had infuriated Islamists.

Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood holds nearly half of the seats in the legislature, which was elected earlier this year.
