International envoy Kofi Annan on Friday condemned the killing of more than 200 people in a Syrian village in the central province of Hama, which the opposition blamed on government forces dpa reported

"I am shocked and appalled by news coming out of the village of Tremseh, near Hama, of intense fighting, significant casualties, and the confirmed use of heavy weaponry such as artillery, tanks and helicopters," Annan said in Geneva.

He said the government was violating its promise to honour the international peace plan by using heavy weapons in populated areas.

"I condemn these atrocities in the strongest possible terms," he said, urging countries with influence on President Bashar al-Assad to make him stop the violence immediately. He did not specifically refer to Syria's ally Russia.
