The leader of a Tunisian opposition party who had been particularly critical of the country's Islamist government was shot dead outside his home in the capital Tunis on Wednesday morning, his family said, dpa reported.
Chokri Belaid, leader of the leftist Movement of Democratic Patriots, was shot by unknown attackers in the neck and head as he was leaving for work, his wife told Chems FM radio.
Belaid, a lawyer, had been outspoken in his criticism of Tunisia's ruling coalition, which is led by the Islamist party Ennahda.
