Most of the 17,000 Israelis forced to flee the country's worst-ever wildfire are being allowed to return to their homes, fire services said Sunday, dpa reported.
"The danger has passed for all the places that were evacuated," official Boaz Rakia told Israeli media.
However, residents of the Kibbutz Beit Oren are still being allowed back home, she said.
Fire services announced Sunday that after 77 hours the blaze that claimed 41 lives, devastated 50 square kilometres of land and destroyed 5 million trees around the Israeli city of Haifa and Carmel mountains was finally under control.
There were no longer any large areas burning and firefighters are working to douse the flames in small pockets, official Yoram Levy said.
