Israel's bushfire claimed its 42nd victim Monday, as Haifa Police Chief Ahuva Tomer died of injuries sustained in the blaze, police announced.
Tomer had been critically injured in the first hours of the fire last Thursday, when she was driving after a bus carrying prison service cadets which got trapped in the inferno, DPA reported.
Some 38 cadets died in the bus, along with two other police officers and a 16-year-old volunteer fireman.
The fire, Israel's worst-ever, broke out shortly before noon Thursday on the Carmel hill south of Haifa, and was finally extinguished overnight after burning for more the 84 hours. It destroyed 50 square kilometres of land and more than 5 million trees, and forced 17,000 people to flee their homes.
