( dpa ) - An Egyptian court Sunday rejected an appeal for release from prison filed by one of the assassins of former president Anwar al-Sadat, saying it was not lodged in accordance with legal rules.

Abud al-Zumur from the extremist Islamic Jihad group was sentenced to 22 years in prison after he had been convicted for involvement in the killing of Sadat in 1981.

Al-Zumur filed the request for release because he had completed his prison sentence.

Al-Zumur was the leader of the Islamic Jihad group until he was succeeded by Aymen al-Zawahiri, who moved on to become the second-in- command of the al-Qaeda terrorist network. dpa str sf sc
