(dpa) - French President Nicolas Sarkozy began a short visit to Romania Monday where he was to meet with his Romanian colleague Traian Basescu.
The presidents were to sign a bilateral agreement of "strategic partnership," the first such agreement that France has signed with an Eastern European country.
Sarkozy, who married pop singer Carla Bruni at the weekend, was also scheduled to make a speech to the Romanian parliament and meet with Romanian Premier Calin Popescu Tariceanu.
