( dpa ) - Syria arrested a political activist, Adnan Makya, as part of a crackdown on pro-democracy dissidents, the National Organization for Human Rights (NOHRS) in Syria said Tuesday.

The 47-year-old Makya, who works in a clothes shop in Damascus, was arrested on Saturday while on duty.

The reason for his arrest is believed to be his participation in a pro-democracy meeting of the Damascus Declaration group.

The group was formed in 2005 and last convened in December with 163 members attending to form a national council.

Makya's arrest brings to 13 the number of dissidents arrested since the December meeting.

A prominent dissident and former member of parliament, Riad Seif, had been arrested and charged with harming the image of Syria in January 28.

The NOHRS called on the Syrian government to release all the detainees from the Damascus Declaration, who were rounded up under the country's emergency law.
