( dpa ) - At least seven people, including four policemen, were injured when a bomb was set off inside a house in Colombo during a cordon and search operation, a military spokesman said Friday.

Police believe that the bomb was set off inside the house at Modara, six kilometres north of Colombo, by a suspected Tamil rebel who had assembled the bomb. The location of the explosion is close to the Colombo port.

More than 10 houses around the vicinity have been damaged and police are continuing to search the area, the spokesman said.

Police have stepped-up search operations in and around the capital as they believe that the Tamil Tiger rebels may be planning more attacks in the city to distract the attention of the security forces from their ongoing military operations against the rebels in the north.
