Ahonen delights home crowd with Kuopio win

( dpa ) - Janne Ahonen delighted a Finnish home crowd on Tuesday with victory in a large hill ski-jumping World Cup competition.

Ahonen, 30, soared 122.5 and 126 metres for a convincing win on 248.3 points. It was the fourth success of the season and the 36th overall for Ahonen, who two months ago claimed a record fifth title at the Four Hills Tour.

Anders Bardal was second with 240.4 points and fellow-Norwegian Tom Hilde third on the podium with 237.2 points in light snowfall.

Austrian Thomas Morgenstern placed eighth on the day but is already assured of the World Cup title with now 1,686 points. Compatriot Gregor Schlierenzauer is second with 1,151, with Ahonen closing in on 1,098 points.

The World Cup continues on Friday on the large hill in Lillehammer, Norway.
