( dpa ) - The United States Monday condemned the violence against UN and NATO personnel in Mitrovica, Kosovo, where United Nations forces have retaken a courthouse occupied by Serbs.
The clash on Sunday between a Serb mob and about 400 police and KFOR peacekeepers injured dozens when the Serbs stoned, firebombed and fired at the international personnel in the Serb-dominated section of Mitrovica.
Tom Casey, deputy spokesman for the US State Department, also said the US criticized Friday's attack by demonstrators to occupy the building.
"We offer our best wishes for a quick recovery to the UN Police and NATO peacekeepers that were wounded in reestablishing control of the facility," Casey said.
The US urged all communities in Kosovo to remain calm and called on the Serbian government to denounce the violence and try to mediate the tensions.
Kosovo's recent declaration of independence from Serbia has stirred tensions and anger in the region.
Kosovo had been under international administration since the ethnic wars of 1999, when Serbian troops carried out ethnic cleansing against the ethnic Albanian, Muslim majority of the country and NATO intervened to protect them.
