( dpa )- A light aircraft believed to be carrying five passengers crashed in a residential area south of London Sunday, witnesses reported.

The plane exploded as it crashed into a suburban residential district in Farnborough, Kent, setting a house on fire, the witnesses said. The county of Kent borders on the Greater London area.

Neighbours said they believed the residents of the house were away on holidays.

Sky News reported the plane was a two- engined Cessna Citation business jet.

A pilot who was landing a light aircraft at nearby Biggin Hill airfield said he heard the pilot of the crashed plane telling airport control that his plane was in difficulties.

British police headquarters Scotland Yard confirmed that a crash had occurred, but did not have any details on possible deaths as a result.

Four ambulances and several fire engines were sent to the scene.
