A British mother who launched a campaign against gun violence after her son was shot by unknown assailants has been found stabbed to death in her flat the city of Leeds in northern Britain, police said Monday, reported dpa.
Pat Regan, a 53-year-old mother of six, founded the Leeds branch of the group Mothers Against Violence, a voluntary organization giving support to those affected by violent crime, after her son Danny was shot dead in December, 2002.
Police said a 20-year-old man was being held on suspicion of murder. Regan's body was found at her home Sunday evening.
In London, Britain's Home Secretary Jacqui Smith said she was "extremely shocked and saddened" by the "tragic death."
The issue of youth gun and knife crime is currently highly topical in Britain, where not a week goes by without a teenager being stabbed or shot.
