Thirty-six miners remained trapped in a flooded mine in southern China, the state-run Xinhua news agency said Tuesday.

When the Nadu coal mine in the southern province of Guangxi was flooded Monday, only seven of the 56 miners could escape, while 13 others were rescued during the night.

Rescuers were also able to contact 12 miners who are trapped about 2,000 metres from the mine entrance and provide them with food and water.

The miners seem not to be in a position to free themselves owing to lack of oxygen, according to dpa.
