Lebanese army helicopter crashes in southern Lebanon

A Lebanese army helicopter crashed in southern Lebanon on Thursday after apparently being struck by gunfire, initial reports by army sources said, reported dpa.

According to intial reports the helicopter was passing over an area where Lebanese army soldiers and United Nations Interim Forces in Southern Lebanon (UNIFIL) were conducting maneuvers near Sujed, Iqlim al Tuffah, east of the southern port city of Sidon.

An officer on board was seriously injured in the crash, the sources said.

The Lebanese army command declined to provide further details about the incident.

Other unconfirmed reports said that helicopter might have experienced technical problems before it crashed.
